About Heather

Heather Welford has been a professional writer, author, journalist and editor for over 40 years.

Heather began as a reporter on newspapers in South Wales before moving into magazines in London. After that period Heather became a freelancer and wrote for all areas of the media, contributing to most national newspapers, plus magazines and websites. She has written many books, reports and information materials. Main topics: health, family life, human interest.

Annie Richardson

A personal family history project

Heather is currently researching the ‘Choppington Tragedy’ of 1898. Annie Richardson, aged 25, killed her only child, Charles, and was sent to Broadmoor asylum for about 25 years. She was married to a German-born pork butcher, Johann Friedrich Rath, and the family lived in the small Northumberland village of Choppington.
